There is some confusion concerning the different ways in which vehicles can be towed. The main types of towing generally used are Flatbeds & Wheel-Lifts. The main differences between these types of towing are briefly explained below.
Flat Bed Towing
For long distance towing flat bed towing is the safest and most secure method to use. The vehicle is positioned securely on a flatbed truck with all of its wheels securely chained to the truck. This prevents extra stress and strain being put on the towed vehicle’s front or rear wheels as can happen with some other types of towing. Some car manufacturers specify that this is the only way in which their vehicles can be towed safely without causing damage to suspension design.
Wheel Lift Towing
Wheel lift towing is the type of towing that you see most often. It entails the towed vehicle’s front or rear wheels being raised off the ground whilst being towed. For short distance towing this is the most used method and it is suitable for the majority of vehicles. The advantage of wheel lift towing is that a vehicle can be quickly hooked up to a tow truck and moved to a repair shop or to a home garage without delay. At Placentia Towing Company we have all the vehicles, equipment, and fully experienced staff to handle any type of towing you may need. Our operatives are fully-trained and experienced in handling any type of vehicle. As an example, we can safely secure vehicles with air shock absorbers or ride levelling systems which can be damaged by tying their wheels down to a flatbed truck. These types of vehicles must have each wheel secured independently to allow for the normal operation of the suspension as it is being driven.
